(Trenton) – Commissioner Stephen Dilts today joined Congressman Rush Holt, Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes, Assemblywoman Linda Greenstein, Lawrence Mayor Pam Mount and West Windsor Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh to announce that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will resurface two miles of Route 1 in Lawrence and West Windsor, Mercer County. The project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“This $2.9 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act project will stimulate economic recovery, provide a steadier and safer drive on Route 1 and preserve the roadway," said Governor Jon S. Corzine.

NJDOT will begin a project to resurface Route 1 in both directions from milepost 6.48 to milepost 8.48 in the vicinity of the D&R Canal. The project was designed by NJDOT and is scheduled for completion in December 2009.

NJDOT will implement overnight single and double lane closures on Route 1 in order to resurface the roadway. One lane of traffic will be maintained on Route 1 in both directions at all times during construction.

The following lane closure hours are scheduled as part of the project:

  • On the two lane sections of Route 1 southbound, single-lane closures may be necessary from Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. the following morning, from Friday at 10 p.m. to Saturday at 9 a.m., from Saturday at 10 p.m. to Sunday at 9 a.m., and from Sunday at 10 p.m. to Monday at 6:30 a.m.

NJDOT will install variable message signs on Route 1 to inform motorists of traffic pattern changes during construction. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org.

ARRA will stimulate New Jersey's economy by creating or supporting thousands of transportation-related jobs and making long-term improvements to roads, bridges and the transit system. New Jersey's transportation allocation includes $652 million for highways and bridges and approximately $425 million for transit. That total includes approximately $164 million for county and local transportation priorities and approximately $19.5 million for transportation enhancement projects.
