NJDOT to reconfigure Route 30 and Pomona Road intersection in Galloway Township

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced that preliminary construction has begun on a project to widen and improve the Route 30 (White Horse Pike) intersection with Pomona Road (CR 575) in Galloway Township, Atlantic County.

“By reconfiguring this intersection NJDOT will reduce congestion experienced by Route 30 motorists,” said Commissioner James Simpson. “This is a cost-effective solution that will improve safety and mobility for Atlantic County residents and summer tourists alike.”

NJDOT’s contractor, Mount Construction Co., has begun deploying advance construction signs and utility relocations along Route 30 earlier this week. Silt fence installation and construction site clearing operations will begin next week, weather permitting, which may require some periodic single-lane and shoulder closures in either direction of the roadway during daytime hours. Major construction activities are expected to begin toward the end of the month.

One travel lane on Route 30 will be maintained in each direction at all times during construction.

The $6.5 million project aims to improve safety and reduce congestion at the intersection of Route 30 and Pomona Road by widening the cross section of Route 30 to feature new left-turn lanes at each approach on the highway to Pomona Road. The existing traffic signals will be modified to accommodate the widened intersection. Drainage improvements will also be made at the intersection including the addition of three new retention basins.

An average of 17,300 vehicles travel this stretch of Route 30 on a daily basis, but in the summer months the traffic volumes are considerably higher. Route 30 currently carries two lanes of traffic in each direction through the intersection with left-turning motorists backing up traffic and causing considerable congestion on the highway. The addition of new left-turn lanes will help alleviate that congestion.

Variable message signs have been installed to inform motorists regarding any changes in traffic patterns. Motorists are also encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
