NJDOT to resurface Route 18 in Middlesex and Monmouth counties
Project includes installation of almost nine miles of new crossover median guide rail

(Trenton) - Commissioner James Simpson today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will resurface approximately ten miles of Route 18 in the townships of Old Bridge, Middlesex County and Colts Neck, Freehold and Marlboro, Monmouth County.

“This project exemplifies our commitment to improving our roads and our emphasis on investing in state-of-good-repair projects,” said Simpson. “This much-needed resurfacing of Route 18 will improve motorist safety and provide a smoother roadway surface.”

NJDOT’s contractor, Tilcon Inc., is scheduled to start shoulder closures to prepare the roadway for resurfacing on Monday, March 7. Resurfacing operations, slated to begin in mid-March, will require single lane closures on Route 18 in both directions during off-peak and overnight hours. All work is weather dependent.

The $12.6 million federally funded project will resurface more than nine miles of Route 18 southbound between mileposts 21.6 and 30.5 and more than ten miles of Route 18 northbound between mileposts 18.9 and 29.5 through the townships of Old Bridge, Marlboro, Freehold and Colts Neck. All entrance and exits ramps will be repaved within this stretch of Route 18.

NJDOT will also install approximately nine miles of new median guide rail to help prevent crossover accidents within the project limits.

“Installing these median barriers simultaneously within existing roadway improvement projects allows us to enhance safety in the most cost-effective manner possible,” Simpson said.

The project is scheduled to be fully completed this fall.
