NJDOT announces Route 46 resurfacing project
in Morris and Essex counties
(Trenton) - A major resurfacing and roadway repair project will begin this week on Route 46 westbound in the townships of Parsippany-Troy Hills and Montville, Morris County and Fairfield, Essex County, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced today.
“Route 46 is a high-volume, east-west commerce corridor that tens of thousands of motorists use every day, so this rehabilitation project is a wise investment in our future,” said Transportation Commissioner James Simpson.
On Monday, March 7, NJDOT’s contractor, Tilcon Inc., is scheduled to start shoulder closures and install advance construction signage. The initial stage of construction involves work off the mainline highway and will not affect traffic.
Resurfacing operations will require overnight single lane closures on Route 46 westbound beginning on or about March 14. NJDOT is confining the repaving work to overnight hours to minimize the impact to motorists. All Route 46 westbound travel lanes will be maintained during daytime hours, with periodic shoulder closures for curb repair work.
The $4.4 million project will mill and repave asphalt sections of the roadway and repair the concrete subsurface on Route 46 westbound at different sections of the highway, between milepost 46.4, just east of I-287, and milepost 55, at Two Bridges Road, through the townships of Parsippany-Troy Hills, Montville and Fairfield. The contractor will begin milling and resurfacing at the eastern end of the project and work west towards I-287.
NJDOT will also upgrade existing curbs, driveways and drainage inlets along Route 46 westbound. The project is scheduled to be completed this fall.
All work is weather dependent.
Variable Message signs will provide motorists with advance notification of traffic pattern changes. Motorists are also encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
