Maintenance
repairs announced on
Route 37
eastbound bridge over Barnegat
Bay
(Trenton) - The
New Jersey Department of Transportation
(NJDOT) today announced that maintenance
repairs are scheduled to begin this
weekend on the Route 37 eastbound
Thomas A. Mathis lift bridge over
the Barnegat Bay connecting Toms River
and Seaside Heights in Ocean County.
Beginning this Saturday night, July
30, NJDOT’s bridge maintenance
contractor, I.E.W., will perform high-priority
repairs to the bridge floor beams.
This work will require closures of
the right and center lanes on Route
37 eastbound between 12 a.m. (midnight)
and 8 a.m., as needed, for approximately
two weeks. One travel lane will be
maintained eastbound at all times.
Variable message signs will be utilized
to provide advance warning of the
lane closures.
The work is focused on a portion
of the bridge located west of the
lift-span, so bridge openings and
closings will continue on their normal
schedule. Marine traffic will not
be impacted by the repairs.
NJDOT has plans for a major reconstruction
of the existing structurally deficient
Route 37 eastbound Thomas A. Mathis
Bridge, including the rehabilitation
of the lift-bridge and electrical/mechanical
systems. That project is currently
in design.
The precise timing of the work is
subject to change due to weather
or other factors. Motorists are encouraged
to check NJDOT’s traffic information

travel information. |
