NJDOT returns Route 1 to original traffic pattern over Heathcote Brook in South Brunswick

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that Route 1 has been restored to its original traffic pattern over Heathcote Brook in South Brunswick.

Construction operations are winding down on the $3 million state-funded project to replace the Heathcote Brook culvert and stabilize the supporting soil under the foundation footings and abutments.

NJDOT’s contractor, Mount Construction Inc., has removed the temporary traffic pattern shift that had been in place since July, and placed all Route 1 northbound and southbound lanes back in their original configuration on the bridge. The culvert was replaced in stages to allow for Route 1 to remain open to traffic in each direction during construction.

Route 1 has also been returned to the normal speed-limit of 55-mph at this location. NJDOT had reduced the speed-limit to 45-mph through the project limits during construction.

NJDOT installed a new sewer line underneath the highway, as well. The contractor will now complete final paving and striping of the roadway approaches in each direction. Construction is scheduled for completion in late-fall 2011.

The old Heathcote Brook culvert had been damaged by past storms requiring emergency temporary stabilization repairs by NJDOT.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
