NJDOT announces pavement repair project
on Route 40 in Carney’s Point and Pilesgrove

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a roadway repair and repaving project is set to begin to address more than 2 miles of Route 40 (Harding Highway) in Carney’s Point and Pilesgrove, Salem County.

NJDOT’s contractor, Richard E. Pierson Construction, will mill and pave Route 40 in both directions between E. Quillytown Road in Carney’s Point (milepost 5.73) and Main Street in Pilesgrove Township (milepost 8.1). The project also includes concrete pavement slab repairs at selected culvert locations within the work zone.

The contractor is scheduled to begin initial construction layout, including sign installation and site mobilization, this week. Initial construction operations will focus on the concrete slab repair work at the culverts. To ensure that the project doesn’t interfere with the nearby Salem County Fair, these traffic shifts will not begin until after August 13. This work will be accomplished during daytime hours, with traffic shifts utilizing the existing shoulders as travel lanes.

Mainline resurfacing operations are expected to begin in the fall. Paving work requiring single-lane closures – utilizing either alternating traffic or eastbound detours - will be performed during overnight hours in order to minimize traffic impacts on Route 40, an important east-west shore route in southern New Jersey. NJDOT will maintain both travel lanes during day time hours, as well as access to all businesses and residences along the state highway.

The $1.7 million project will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway.

Dynamic Message Signs will provide motorists with advance notification of traffic pattern changes. The work will be coordinated with the Delaware River Bay Authority, which maintains the Delaware Memorial Bridge, which is located a few miles west of the Route 40 construction area. NJDOT anticipates project completion in spring 2013.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org real-time travel information.
