Weekend closures announced for Route 21 northbound Exit 8 ramps in Nutley
Ongoing bridge painting project to require
three weekends of detours

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a series of closures for the Route 21 northbound Exit 8 interchange ramp connections with Park Avenue in Nutley, Essex County over three subsequent weekends to facilitate an ongoing bridge painting project. The Route 21 northbound off-ramp to Park Avenue is major connection to Nutley, as well as to Lyndhurst on the eastern side of the Passaic River.

NJDOT’s contractor, Anka Painting, is scheduled to close the Route 21 northbound entrance and exit ramps to/from Park Avenue from 8:30 p.m. Friday, October 12 until around 5 a.m. on Monday, October 15. The following two (2) weekend closures are also planned to complete this work, utilizing the same closure intervals and detours listed above: 10/19/12 and 10/26/12.

Park Avenue will be closed to traffic underneath the bridge, between River Road in Nutley and Riverside Avenue in Lyndhurst.

• Route 21 northbound motorists destined for Park Avenue east into Lyndhurst or Park Avenue west into Nutley will be directed to use Exit 7 for Route 7/Rutgers Street/Belleville Turnpike.
• Park Avenue eastbound motorists from Nutley seeking access to Route 21 northbound will be directed to River Road south to the ramp for Route 21 northbound at Little Street.
• Park Avenue motorists from Lyndhurst seeking access to Route 21 northbound will be directed to use Riverside Avenue south to Route 7 west to Main Street northbound to Route 21 northbound.

NJDOT will utilize dynamic message signs and static detour signs throughout the area to alert motorists of the bridge closures and detours.

These weekend ramp closures are necessary to provide a safe and efficient work zone for the contractor to paint the Route 21 bridges over Park Avenue. Painting is an important element to maintaining the structural integrity of a bridge.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are also encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
