Route 22 eastbound restored to full capacity
near Mountain Avenue ramp
Highway had been reduced to one travel lane since early May
for drainage and curb repairs

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that Route 22 eastbound has been restored to full capacity – two travel lanes with an acceleration lane – earlier than anticipated near Mountain Avenue in Bridgewater and Somerville.

NJDOT had restricted the highway to one travel lane at this location in early-May in order to install a new drainage system and make curb and pavement repairs along Route 22 eastbound between the interchange with Route 202/206 and Mountain Avenue. NJDOT’s contractor, Green Construction, Inc., reopened the right travel lane to through traffic Wednesday morning, June 5.

The lane closure was originally anticipated to remain in place until mid-June. However, the contractor was able to accomplish the work earlier and the lane was reopened accordingly.

The work is included as part of the $7.9 million safety improvement and congestion relief project that began in February along a three mile stretch of Route 22 in Bridgewater and Somerville, Somerset County. The project will reconstruct and widen the existing highway shoulders to provide for new auxiliary acceleration/deceleration lanes along Route 22, creating safer and improved access at key locations. In addition, the project includes myriad design and technological upgrades intended to improve traffic flow through the corridor. The project is scheduled for completion in early-summer 2014.

Outside of this specific construction phase, NJDOT will maintain all available travel lanes on Route 22 between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. during the week. The work is being accomplished with overnight lane closures and permanent shoulder closures with traffic shifts.

Motorists are encouraged to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
