NJDOT announces new traffic pattern
on Route 35 in Seaside Heights and Seaside Park

Work on Central Avenue requires
temporary detour as project advances

(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a new traffic pattern on Route 35/Central Avenue northbound in Seaside Heights and Seaside Park as the Department's Route 35 Reconstruction project along the Barnegat Peninsula in Ocean County advances.

On Monday, March 17, NJDOT's contractor, Union Paving & Construction Co., is scheduled to close a portion of Route 35/Central Avenue northbound from J Street in Seaside Park to Lincoln Avenue in Seaside Heights for approximately four weeks. Route 35/Central Avenue southbound lanes will remain open.

This portion of Route 35 consists of a divided roadway offering three travel lanes with shoulders in each direction through both municipalities. During this stage of construction, NJDOT's contractor will install all necessary utility infrastructure, including drainage systems, and complete a full depth roadway replacement including curbs, sidewalks, and ADA-compliant ramps.

Motorists will be directed to Boulevard using the following detours:

  • Route 35 Northbound Motorists: Head east on J Street in Seaside Park, turn left onto the Boulevard, continue to the traffic signal at Hamilton Avenue and turn left and then turn right onto Central Avenue to continue northbound.
  • Route 35 Southbound Motorists: Turn left onto Lincoln Avenue in Seaside Heights, turn right onto the Boulevard, continue to the stop sign and turn right onto J Street, then left onto Route 35/Southwest Central Avenue to continue southbound.
  • Route 35 Businesses: Businesses along Central Avenue southbound in Seaside Park will remain open in this area with access maintained via O Street.  Signs will be posted on the Boulevard directing motorists to Route 35 Businesses at O Street.
  • Residents: Residents on the west side (Bay side) of Route 35 may use O Street or J Street.
  • Private driveways within the construction zone along Route 35/Central Avenue northbound will have access during construction, but may experience temporary access denial while utilities are installed in the roadway adjacent to the driveway.  In this event, the homeowner will have advance notice of any temporary inconvenience.

Route 35 Reconstruction Project Details
In July 2013, Governor Chris Christie announced the start of the $265 million construction project to rebuild Route 35, a state highway along the New Jersey coastline that sustained heavy damage during Superstorm Sandy. The Department has divided the project into three geographical sections, has awarded contracts to three contractors, and construction operations on each of the three contracts are well underway. NJDOT is scheduling the work to minimize inconvenience to motorists during the busy summer seasons.

In advance of the project, NJDOT has engaged in a robust community outreach effort that includes a hotline telephone number, 732-230-7356, and email address, restorenj35@mbi-gs.com for residents to pose questions or provide suggestions as work progresses.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org real-time travel information.
