Centennial Avenue northbound traffic
to be shifted as part of Route 18
extension to I-287 in Piscataway

Road reconstruction will limit
traffic to one lane in each direction

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced Centennial Avenue northbound in Piscataway, Middlesex County, will be closed with traffic shifted to the southbound side of the road as the Route 18 extension to I-287 project advances.

Beginning at 5 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, June 13, NJDOT’s contractor, Intercounty Paving Associates LLC, will close Centennial Avenue northbound between Hoes Lane and Knightsbridge Road. Northbound traffic will be shifted onto the southbound side of Centennial Avenue so there will be one lane in each direction.

The traffic shift is necessary for the full reconstruction of Centennial Avenue northbound, and will include the construction of retaining walls, a curb guide rail and the milling and paving of new asphalt on the roadway. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.

Once this phase of the project is complete, traffic is scheduled this fall to be shifted to the newly constructed northbound lanes with one lane of traffic in each direction, and the southbound lanes will be closed and reconstructed.

The work is part of a $28 million project that began in 2012 to retrofit the existing Hoes Lane/Centennial Avenue corridor to convert these local roadways into the final portion of Route 18, extending the four-lane arterial state highway approximately 2.5 miles to its new northern terminus at I-287.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.  Motorists are encouraged to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
