Route 12 to be closed
for railroad crossing work in Flemington

Rehabilitation project will require detours next week

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require the closure and detour of Route 12 in Flemington, Hunterdon County next week.

Beginning at 6:00 a.m. Monday, July 20, until 7 p.m. Friday, July 24, Route 12 is scheduled to be closed to traffic in both directions at the freight rail crossing near the intersection of Route 12 and Stangl Road.

The following detours will be in place:

  • Cars will be directed to Sergeantsville Road/CR 523 to Dayton Road to South Main Street and back to Route 12
  • Trucks traveling eastbound on Route 12 will be directed to Sergeantsville Road/CR 523 to Easton Trenton Turnpike/CR 579 south to Toad Lane east to Route 202 south to the exit for CR 179 where they may make a U-turn to Route 202 north
  • Trucks seeking to travel westbound on Route 12 will be directed to use the Flemington Circle to take Route 202 south to Toad Lane west to Easton Trenton Turnpike/CR 579 north to Sergeantsville Road/CR 523 north to Route 12 west

The truck detour is lengthy because of several bridges with either low clearance or low weight restrictions. The detours will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.

In order to provide a safer and smoother railroad crossing in Flemington the freight rail contractor will replace the existing crossing with a new concrete freight rail crossing bed and repave the asphalt approaches. This project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
