Route 70 repair project
to resume next week in Cherry Hill

Scheduled lane closures should be expected

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced that work on the maintenance project to improve the condition of Route 70 in both directions from mile post 2.55 (Chambers Ave.) to mile post 5.33 (New Jersey Turnpike overpass) in Cherry Hill will resume next week.

On Monday, March 27, NJDOT Contractor, DeFino Contracting Co., will resume work on the pavement repair project that began last summer, but was suspended due to the winter season shutdown. The project is limited in scope, but includes upgrading traffic signals with image detection devices, removal and replacement of faulted/damaged concrete slabs, reconstruction and leveling of stormwater inlets and manholes, limited construction of concrete curb ramps, and final milling and paving using a high performance thin overlay. Lane closures will be limited to off peak times to decrease the impact on the motoring public.

Planned lane closures will be scheduled as follows:

Shoulder closures will be permitted at any time, as long as they do not impact the travel lanes.

This $9 million project is split into two contracts. The first contract is currently in progress and addresses mile post 0.00 to mile post 2.55 and mile post 5.33 to 7.67. Work on both portions of this contract is expected to complete in the fall of 2017.  Lane closures will be coordinated allowing both contractors to work simultaneously.

This work will address some of the worst road surface in the State and significantly improve driving conditions until a much larger, $30 million project begins in 2020 that will overhaul this entire stretch of Route 70. The ongoing work will help reduce the impact of the future project.

Variable message sign boards and lane closure signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of planned closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
