Route 206 Whitehorse Circle detours begin this weekend in Mercer County

Detours necessary to advance circle improvements project

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced temporary detours at the Whitehorse Circle, located at the intersection of Route 206, CR 524/South Broad Street and CR 533/Whitehorse Avenue as the traffic improvements project advances in Hamilton, Mercer County.

Beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday, September 9 and continuing throughout the fall, NJDOT’s contractor South State Inc., will detour portions of the Whitehorse Circle in stages for approximately the next two months. Access to local businesses will be maintained during construction.

The closures and detours will begin with CR 533/Whitehorse Avenue southbound to CR 524/South Broad Street eastbound, Route 206 southbound to CR 524/South Broad Street eastbound, and also CR 524 South Broad Street westbound to Route 206 southbound at the Whitehorse Circle intersection for several weeks, to allow for ongoing traffic improvements to advance. Motorists will be directed to the following signed detours:

CR 533/Whitehorse Avenue southbound to CR 524/South Broad Street eastbound
  • Motorists on Whitehorse Avenue southbound will be directed to Route 206 northbound
  • From Route 206 northbound to Irvington Place
  • From Irvington Place to Route 206 southbound
  • From Route 206 southbound to South Broad Street

Route 206 southbound to CR 524/South Broad Street eastbound (overnight only)

  • Motorists from Route 206 southbound will be directed to Carmen Avenue
  • From Carmen Avenue to Route 206 northbound
  • From Route 206 northbound to South Broad Street

CR 524 South Broad Street (westbound) to Route 206/Bordentown Road (southbound)

  • Motorists on South Broad Street westbound will be directed to Route 206 northbound
  • From Route 206 northbound to Irvington Place
  • From Irvington Place to Route 206 southbound

As construction at the Whitehorse Circle advances in stages, the first three detours will be removed and additional closures with detours may be required.

The $4.3 million federally-funded Whitehorse Circle improvements project which began with utility work in the fall of 2016, is expected to be completed in late spring 2017. The project will improve safety and operations at the Whitehorse Circle by replacing the Circle with a modern roundabout, utilizing safer entry points into the roundabout, and eliminates the circle cut through lanes.

Portable and overhead variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
