I-280 westbound lanes restored as bridge replacement project advances in Roseland

Bridge construction requires shoulder closure and traffic shift

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the completion of the I-280 westbound bridge deck as the I-280 over Passaic River bridge deck replacement project advances in Essex County.

Beginning at 11 p.m. tonight, Friday, April 20 until 6 p.m. Sunday, April 22, NJDOT’s contractor, Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc., is scheduled to restore westbound traffic on I-280 westbound to two travel lanes and a right shoulder. To do so, the contractor will close the temporary left shoulder and remove the temporary crossover to the eastbound side of the bridge.

The left lane on I-280 eastbound will remain closed while the contractor conducts structural and pavement repairs to the eastbound bridge deck. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on I-280 eastbound. The project is expected to be complete this Spring.

The $7.2 million federally-funded project, is designed in stages and started construction in July 2017. The project demolished and replaced existing structurally deficient bridge decks on I-280 westbound. NJDOT has coordinated with local officials throughout the design and construction process. The project to repair the eastbound side, which is currently in concept development, is expected to begin in 2020.

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the bridge deck replacements project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weathe ror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info and on the NJDOT Facebook page.
