Route 1 resurfacing project begins in Hudson County

Alternating overnight lane and ramp closures necessary

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a resurfacing project that will require lane, shoulder, and ramp closures along one mile of Route 1 in North Bergen, Hudson County.

Beginning today, Monday, July 16, NJDOT’s contractor,
Defino Trucking, is scheduled to begin preparation and drainage work along the shoulders of Route 1 in both directions between Route 3 and 46th Street in North Bergen prior to concrete work and milling and paving. Concrete curb, sidewalk, and ADA ramp work is expected to begin in the next few weeks, and milling and paving is expected to begin in the fall. The work is designed in stages in order to minimize impact to traffic. NJDOT will provide advanced notification prior to any overnight ramp or lane closures associated with this project.

The $3.9 million state-funded Route 1 resurfacing project will mill and pave one mile of Route 1 and three ramps in both directions between Route 3 and 46th street. In addition, the contractor will reconstruct or upgrade approximately 60 ADA curb ramps and sidewalks, upgrade sections of guiderail, and perform traffic signal and lighting upgrades at two intersections (Route 1 and 43rd Street and the Paterson Plank Road Ramp to Route 1 northbound). The project is expected to be completed in summer of 2019.

Variable message signs and detour signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the resurfacing project.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website
