Route 35 Bridge over Ashley Avenue repair project begins in Monmouth County

Temporary lane closures in both directions to remove concrete barrier

(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the beginning of a project to rehabilitate the Route 35 Bridge over Ashley Avenue in Brielle.

Beginning at 12 p.m., Tuesday, September 4, until 3 p.m. the same day and continuing periodically through the week, NJDOT's contractor, Ritacco Construction, Inc., is scheduled close one lane in each direction on the Route 35 Bridge over Ashley Avenue to remove the median barrier curb in order to construct a temporary crossover ramp. Route 35 normally is two lanes in each direction. At least one lane will be maintained at all times.

Other work will include the installation of barrier curb on the southbound shoulder, construction of a temporary pedestrian detour, and installation of protective shielding. Beginning in mid-September, the contractor will close one lane in each direction as the project to repair the bridge advances.

The $6.3 million dollar federally-funded project will replace the deck, parapets, sidewalk, and other improvements to the superstructure, substructure, lighting, and approaches to the bridge. The project is designed in stages to minimize impacts to traffic. The project is expected to be complete by summer of 2019.

Advanced warning and variable messaging signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. NJDOT will provide more information before any lane closures are scheduled.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
