(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced that the two eastbound lanes on Route 72 and one westbound lane will be closed and shifted tonight to restore traffic to the normal configuration following the completion of a culvert installation as the roadway improvement project between the Garden State Parkway and the Stafford Square Shopping Center in Stafford advances.
Beginning at 9 p.m., tonight, Friday March 22, until 8 a.m. the next day, NJDOT’s contractor Earle Asphalt Co., will close the two left eastbound lanes and one left westbound lane on Route 72 between the Garden State Parkway and Martin Truex Jr. Boulevard to shift traffic back to its normal configuration of three lanes in each direction.
Installation of the culvert began on March 4 and included a series of traffic shifts over the past few weeks to complete the work. Construction will continue in the median, Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., weather permitting.
Route 72 westbound right lane closure begins next week
Beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, March 25 until 3:30 p.m. and continuing daily Monday through Friday for about a month, the Route 72 westbound right lane between the Garden State Parkway and Martin Truex Jr. Boulevard will be closed for utility work.
The $11.6 million federally-funded Route 72 East Road project will provide highway and signal intersection improvements to address congestion and safety concerns. Improvements are scheduled to include the addition of a 10-foot shoulder in each direction on Route 72 between the Garden State Parkway and the Stafford Square Shopping Center, median widening, new barrier curbs, plus new traffic signals and roadway improvements at two Route 72 intersections - Roosevelt Boulevard and Doc Cramer Boulevard.
There will be a new culvert and a revised jug handle circling a water basin from Route 72 westbound to a relocated East Road (East Road is being moved approximately 200 feet east from its current location), two new storm water basins will be constructed further down on Route 72 westbound, and West Road will be relocated east from its current location between McDonalds and Mr. Tire to a new location between Element Restaurant and Starboard Plaza. Washington Road, located parallel to Route 72 will end at the new West Road.
Construction is expected to be completed in late 2019. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
