Route 173 closed and detoured for one year as the Bridge over Pohatcong Creek replacement project advances in Warren County

Road closure required for bridge replacement project

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the long-term closure and detour of Route 173 at the Bridge over Pohatcong Creek, both eastbound and westbound, in Warren County for a bridge replacement project.
Beginning at 11 p.m., tonight, Friday, March 29 and remaining fully closed for one year, NJDOT’s contractor Ritacco Construction, is scheduled to replace the existing bridge with a single-span, 112 feet long bridge.
The following detour will be in place:

Route 173 eastbound detour

  • Motorists traveling eastbound on Route 173 will be directed to make a left at Greenwich Church Road/CR 644
  • Turn right onto Beatty’s Road
  • Turn right onto South Main Street/CR 637
  • Follow to Route 173

Route 173 westbound detour

  • Motorists traveling westbound on Route 173 will be directed to make a right onto South Main Street/CR 637
  • Turn left onto Beatty’s Road
  • Turn left onto Greenwich Church Road/CR 644
  • Follow to Route 173

The $4.8 million dollar federally-funded project will replace the existing poor condition bridge over the Pohatcong Creek with a single-span bridge, 112 feet long, consisting of a concrete deck, simply supported with pre-stressed concrete girder on pile footings.  The roadway configuration will be two, twelve-foot lanes and two, eight-foot shoulders.

Variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work.
