Route 46 to be closed and detoured for
railroad-crossing repairs in Roxbury

Traffic to be detoured using Route 10 on Friday night and Saturday

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced Route 46 will be closed and detoured in both directions for a railroad crossing rehabilitation project on Friday night and Saturday in Roxbury, Morris County.

Beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, April 5, until 7 p.m. Saturday, April 6, Route 46 is scheduled to be closed and detoured in both directions between Canfield Avenue and Route 10 for work on the railroad grade crossing between N. Hillside Avenue and Ballantine Street in Roxbury. Local access will be maintained for residents and businesses. Motorists should expect congestion and delays during the Friday evening commute. The following detours will be in place:

Route 46 eastbound:

  • Motorists traveling on Route 46 eastbound will be directed to stay straight and merge onto Route 10 east
  • Turn left on Canfield Avenue/CR 669 to Route 46

Route 46 westbound:

  • Motorists traveling on Route 46 westbound will be directed to turn left onto Canfield Avenue/CR 669
  • Turn right on Route 10 west, which merges back into Route 46

The traffic detour will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadways will be reopened accordingly.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Roxbury, the existing crossing will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
