Route 18 overnight lane closures needed between Rues Lane and Main Street to implement traffic shift in East Brunswick

One lane of traffic will be maintained in both directions at all times

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a series of staggered overnight lane closures on Route 18 between Main Street and Rues Lane in East Brunswick as the pavement rehabilitation project advances in Middlesex County.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, June 6, NJDOT’s contractor, Earle Asphalt, is scheduled to close one lane on Route 18 northbound between Main Street and Rues Lane to implement a traffic shift towards the right shoulder. A second northbound lane will be closed at 10 p.m.  At least one lane of traffic will be maintained at all times.

At 9 p.m., one lane on Route 18 southbound will be closed between Main Street and Rues Lane to implement a traffic shift towards the right shoulder on that side of the roadway.  A second lane will be closed at 11 p.m.  At least one lane of traffic will be maintained at all times.

The closures will allow the roadway to be restriped and put back to original traffic pattern. Work on the northbound and southbound sides of the roadway will be completed by 6 a.m. tomorrow, June 7, and the roadway will be returned to its original three-lane condition.

The $14.2 million federally-funded Route 18, South of Texas Road to Rues Lane, Pavement Improvement project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow by making improvements to six miles of deteriorated pavement and the installation of pedestrian safety devices. The project is expected to be completed in late fall 2019.

Variable message signs and detour signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the resurfacing project.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info and on the NJDOT Facebook page.
