Route 35 Bridge over Perth Amboy Connector Road replacement project begins in Perth Amboy

Alternating traffic overnight to establish traffic shift

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a bridge replacement project on the Route 35 Bridge over the Perth Amboy Connector in Perth Amboy.  This bridge is located just north of the Route 35 Victory Bridge over the Raritan River.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, June 7, until 6 a.m. Saturday, June 8, NJDOT’s contractor, Konkus, Corp., will close three lanes on Route 35 between Fayette Street and Sayre Avenue and alternate northbound and southbound traffic using flaggers in the remaining lane.  These three closed lanes will be reopened following the completion of overnight construction.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 8, until 6 a.m. Sunday, June 9, the contractor will again close three lanes on Route 35 between Fayette Street and Sayre Avenue and alternate northbound and southbound traffic using flaggers in the remaining lane.

When the road reopens Sunday morning, Route 35 will be reduced to one lane in each direction and shifted to the northbound side of the bridge to allow the demolition and reconstruction of the southbound side of the bridge.  This configuration is expected to remain in place until the fall 2020. One lane will be maintained in each direction throughout construction.

The $9.9 million federally-funded project will replace the bridge, which is in poor condition. Construction will take place in stages with the southbound side of the bridge reconstructed first. Once that side of the bridge is completed in the fall of 2020, traffic will be shifted to the newly constructed southbound side of the bridge to allow construction of the northbound side.  The project also will replace guiderail and fencing.  The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.  Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
