Bloomfield Avenue overnight lane closures required as bridge rehabilitation project advances in Essex County

Westbound side of bridge complete, work to begin on eastbound side

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced an overnight lane closure to shift traffic onto the newly reconstructed westbound side of Bloomfield Avenue as the Bloomfield Avenue/CR 506 Bridge over NJ TRANSIT project advances in Montclair, Essex County.

Beginning at 9 p.m., tonight, Friday, June 28, until 12 noon, Saturday, June 29, NJDOT’s contractor, IEW Construction Group, Inc., will close lanes on the Bloomfield Avenue/CR 506 Bridge and maintain a single lane of alternating traffic for a project stage change. By Saturday afternoon, the two eastbound lanes on Bloomfield Avenue will be closed to allow for the demolition and reconstruction of the bridge deck and abutments on that side of the bridge.  One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on the newly reconstructed westbound side of the roadway.

The $11.7 million state-funded project will replace the existing superstructure over NJ TRANSIT’s Montclair Rail Line near Maple Avenue and make repairs to the existing wing walls.  In addition, the bridge parapets and approach slabs will be repaired or replaced as needed.  The four-lane bridge consists of two lanes and a pedestrian sidewalk in each direction.  Construction on the bridge is expected to be completed by 2020.

The project is advancing in stages in order to minimize impacts to motorists.  A temporary shuttle will be provided to accommodate pedestrians during necessary sidewalk closures on the bridge.  The Department will coordinate with NJ TRANSIT and local authorities in advance of any required closures resulting from the construction project.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.  Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
