Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced Stelton Road will be closed and detoured this weekend for railroad crossing signal work north of I-287 in Piscataway, Middlesex County.

Beginning at 7 a.m., Saturday, July 13, until 7 p.m., Sunday, July 14, Stelton Road will be closed and detoured in both directions at the railroad crossing approximately three-quarters of a mile north of I-287 Exit 5.  The following detours will be in place:

South Washington Avenue southbound detour

  • Motorists traveling southbound on South Washington Avenue will be directed to turn left onto Carlton Avenue
  • Turn right onto New Brunswick Avenue to Stelton Road

Stelton Road southbound

  • Motorists traveling southbound on Stelton Road will be directed to turn left onto South Washington Avenue
  • Turn right onto Carlton Avenue
  • Turn right onto New Brunswick Avenue to Stelton Road

Stelton Road northbound

  • Motorists traveling northbound on Stelton Road will be directed to right onto New Brunswick Avenue
  • Turn onto Carlton Avenue
  • Turn right onto South Washington Avenue

The project will allow Conrail to install a signal cantilever at the crossing. The traffic detours will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
