Route 9 northbound lane closure begins next week as the Route 440 Bridges over and Garden State Parkway and Route 9 advances

Lane closure necessary for bearing replacement work

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the left lane of Route 9 northbound outer roadway will be closed beginning next week for approximately three weeks as the Route 440 Bridge over Route 9 and Garden State Parkway (GSP) project advances in Woodbridge.

Beginning at 9 a.m., Monday, July 15 and continuing for approximately three weeks, NJDOT’s contractor, Ritacco Construction, Inc., will close the left lane of Route 9 northbound outer roadway/ramp toward Route 440 and I-287. The right lane will remain open for access to the exit ramp to Route 440 northbound and I-287 northbound.

The closure will allow the construction of towers needed to replace bearings on a bridge pier under Route 440. The lane closure will begin before the split where the Route 9 northbound ramp to Route 440 and I-287 begins and will continue until just past the exit for Route 440 north. At least one lane will be maintained during construction. This is the first of four piers that will have bearings replaced as part of the project.

The $14 million federally-funded Route 440 Bridges over Route 9/Garden State Parkway project, which started in May 2017, will replace the seven-span bridge deck, approach slabs, guiderails, parapets, bridge bearings and repair the substructure. The bridge replacement project is expected to be completed in fall 2019.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
