Route 139 Lower Level eastbound this weekend for final paving
Traffic will be diverted to Route 139 Upper Level
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced Route 139 Lower Level eastbound will be closed and detoured this weekend for final paving as the Pulaski Skyway Contract 2 Rehabilitation of Route 139 nears completion.
Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, August 16 until 2 p.m. Saturday, August 17, and again from and 11 p.m. Saturday, August 17 until 3 p.m. Sunday, August 18, NJDOT’s contractor, Schiavone Construction, is scheduled to close Route 139 Lower Level eastbound and one lane in the westbound direction for final paving. One westbound lane will remain open. Route 139 Lower Level eastbound will be closed and detoured at Tonnele Circle with traffic diverted to the Upper Level with the following detour:
Route 139 eastbound detour:
- Traffic in Tonnele Circle will be directed south on Tonnele Avenue
- Turn left onto St. Paul’s Avenue
- Turn left on JFK Boulevard
- Turn right onto Route 139 Upper Level
Motorist going to the Holland Tunnel from points west and south are advised to take the NJ Turnpike-Hudson County Extension/I-78 eastbound at New Jersey Turnpike Exit 14 to avoid this construction.
This work is part of the $104 million Pulaski Contract 2, which will repair and improve the upper and lower levels of Route 139. Route 139 links the eastern end of the Pulaski Skyway to the Jersey City waterfront. During this contract, the deck on Route 139 Upper Level eastbound was replaced, along with five cross street bridges from Palisade Avenue to Kennedy Boulevard.
Contract 2, which is nearing completion, is part of the $1 billion Pulaski Skyway rehabilitation project, which is being advanced through 10 separate construction contracts into the year 2024. The massive improvement project will extend the life of the Skyway by 75 years.

The Department is carefully coordinating the Pulaski Skyway project with other regional transportation infrastructure projects to minimize traffic congestion.

NJDOT will be using Variable Message Signs to provide advance notification to motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work.
