Railroad-crossing repairs begin on Federal Road in Monroe

Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require the closure and detour of Federal Road for three days in Monroe, Middlesex County.

Beginning at 7 a.m., Monday, August 19, until 7 a.m. Thursday, August 22, the two-way traffic on Federal Road is scheduled to be closed and detoured between Monroe Boulevard and Tracy Station Road for work on the railroad crossing. Local access will be maintained for residents and businesses. The following detours will be in place:

Federal Road eastbound detour:

  • Motorists traveling eastbound on Federal Road toward Tracy Station Road will be directed to turn left onto Monroe Boulevard
  • Turn right onto Gravel Hill-Spotswood Road northbound
  • Turn right onto Hoffman Station Road/CR 614 eastbound
  • Turn right onto Buckelew Avenue/CR 522 eastbound
  • Turn right onto Tracy Station Road southbound back to Federal Road

Federal Road westbound detour:

  • Motorists traveling westbound on Federal Road will be directed to turn right onto Tracy Station Road northbound
  • Turn left onto Buckelew Avenue/CR 522 westbound
  • Turn left onto Hoffman Station Road/CR 614 westbound
  • Turn left onto Gravel Hill-Spotswood Road southbound
  • Turn left onto Monroe Boulevard eastbound back to Federal Road

The traffic detour will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Monroe, the existing crossing will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program that repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
