Route 1&9 Truck to be closed in both directions this weekend for repairs to the bridge over the Hackensack River between Jersey City and Kearny

Traffic to be detoured while fender repairs are made

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the closure of Route 1&9 Truck in both directions between Jersey City and Kearny this weekend for repairs to the bridge across the Hackensack River. Motorists can expect congestion and are advised to avoid the area.

Beginning at 10 p.m. tonight, Friday, September 6 until 1 a.m. Monday, September 9, NJDOT’s contractor PKF Mark III, will close and detour Route 1&9 Truck in both directions between Hackensack Avenue in Kearny and Communipaw Avenue in Jersey City to install fender piles under the bridge across the Hackensack River. The work requires the bridge to be lifted to provide enough room for equipment.

Local access between Newark and Kearny will be maintained. NJ Transit Bus Routes 1, 67, and 319 will be detoured. For more information see NJ Transit’s advisory. The following detours will be in place:

Route 1&9 Truck northbound detour:

  • Traffic Route 1&9 Truck north will be directed to take the Hackensack Avenue Exit
  • Turn left onto Hackensack Avenue north
  • Turn left onto 2nd Street
  • Turn right onto Central Avenue
  • Turn right onto Pennsylvania Avenue, which becomes Fish House Road
  • Follow Fish House Road onto Route 7 west toward Belleville
  • Stay left and follow signs for Harrison/Newark
  • Take the exit for Route 7 east to Route 1&9 Jersey City
  • Take Route 7 east across the Wittpenn Bridge
  • Stay in the right lane
  • Turn right at the traffic signal onto Route 1&9 Truck south

Route 1&9 southbound from Jersey City detour:

  • Traffic on Route 1&9 south in Jersey City will be directed to stay right and follow signs for Route 7 west/Wittpenn Bridge
  • Cross the Wittpenn Bridge and take the first exit for Fish House Road
  • Follow Fish House Road, which becomes Pennsylvania Avenue
  • Turn left on Central Avenue
  • Turn right onto Route 1&9 Truck south

Route 1&9 Truck southbound/Communipaw Avenue detour:

  • Traffic at the intersection of Route 1&9 Truck south and Communipaw Avenue in Jersey City will be directed to take Route 1&9 Truck north
  • Traffic will follow signs for Route 7 west/Wittpenn Bridge
  • Cross the Wittpenn Bridge and take the first exit for Fish House Road
  • Follow Fish House Road, which becomes Pennsylvania Avenue
  • Turn left on Central Avenue
  • Turn right onto Route 1&9 Truck south

The work is part of a project that will replace three deteriorated expansion joints – two east of the lift portion of the bridge over the Passaic River and one west of the lift portion of the bridge. The project will require between eight and 10 closures between now and the completion of the project, which is expected by the end of spring 2020.  Last weekend, Route 1&9 Truck south was closed for work on the expansion joints.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
