I-287 north ramp to I-78 east to be closed and detoured overnight Friday in Somerset County

Closure necessary to restripe ramp

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the I-287 northbound ramp to I-78 eastbound will be closed overnight tonight as the I-78/I-287 Interchange Improvements project nears completion in Bedminster, Somerset County.

Beginning at 10 p.m., tonight, Friday, September 13, until 5 a.m. Saturday, September 14, NJDOT’s Contractor, Midlantic Construction LLC., is scheduled to close the I-287 northbound ramp to I-78 eastbound to restripe the ramp. Earlier in the week final paving was completed. The following detour will be in place:

I-287 northbound to I-78 eastbound Detour:

  • Motorists on I-287 northbound will be directed past exit 21A to exit 22B/Route 202/206 northbound
  • Stay right and use the jughandle to make a U-Turn onto Route 202/206 southbound
  • Take the exit to I-287 southbound
  • Take exit 21A to I-78 eastbound

The $24.5 million federally-funded I-287/I-78 Interchange Improvements project included the construction of a new flyover ramp from I-78 eastbound to provide a right side entry to I-287 northbound using a new loop ramp. The existing ramp and the left side entry onto I-287 northbound were eliminated. The project required the realignment of the I-287 northbound Exit 21A ramp to I-78, as well as the realignment of the I-287 northbound Exit 22A ramp to Route 202/206 southbound. The project is on schedule, and expected to be completed in late 2019.
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes. NJDOT will provide information before any upcoming road or ramp closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
