NJ Tax E-News  05/27/11

The Division of Taxation will be mailing applications for the 2010 homestead benefit shortly. Applications will be mailed over the next three weeks to all eligible homeowners, both seniors (age 65 or older on December 31, 2010) and nonseniors. The deadline for filing these applications is October 31, 2011.

The homestead rebate application delivery dates by county are:

County Expected Delivery Date
Camden, Hudson, Hunterdon, Salem, Somerset June 4
Bergen, Burlington, Cumberland, Warren June 7
Gloucester, Mercer, Middlesex, Passaic June 9
Cape May, Union June 11
Atlantic, Essex, Monmouth, Sussex June 14
Morris, Ocean June 16
Because this year's proposed State Budget limits eligibility for senior/disabled homeowners to those with New Jersey gross income of $150,000 or less, and for nonsenior/nondisabled homeowners to those with New Jersey gross income of $75,000 or less, many homeowners will not receive applications.

Eligible homeowners will receive their homestead benefits for 2010 as credits on their 2012 property tax bills.

With very few exceptions, homeowner benefit applications must be filed over the Internet or by phone. The answers to most questions can be found in the application packet. Homeowners who receive a packet should read it carefully, and if they meet the eligibility requirements, complete the worksheet in the packet prior to filing.

The homeowner benefit Internet filing application on the Division of Taxation Web site and automated telephone filing system (1-877-658-2972) will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the filing period. Homeowners who have questions or need help filing their applications can call the Homestead Benefit Hotline at 1-888-238-1233. Representatives are available from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays.

The deadline for filing 2010 Senior Freeze (Property Tax Reimbursement) Program applications has been extended to October 31, 2011. The current deadline is June 1. The Senior Freeze (Property Tax Reimbursement) Program is different from the Homestead Benefit Program. They are two distinct property tax relief programs with different eligibility requirements and separate applications.

For information about the Senior Freeze Program, or to obtain an application, contact the Property Tax Reimbursement Hotline at 1-800-882-6597 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Information is also available on the Division of Taxation's Web site.
