Derick Banta House
Grant Award: $25,875 (2024) Grant Recipient: Borough of Dumont County: BergenMunicipality: Dumont Borough
Constructed in the 18th century, the Derick Banta House exemplifies the architectural styles and construction techniques of its era. The house's design and structural details provide valuable insights into the early architectural practices and domestic life in the region. Named after its first owner, Derick Banta, the house is linked to significant figures in the borough's history. The Banta family played a notable role in the early development of the area.
Dumont, originally known as Schraalenburgh, was renamed in 1898 after its first mayor, Dumont Clarke. The area was first settled by the Tappan-Lenape Native Americans before being colonized by Dutch and French Huguenots in the late 17th century. Located 16 miles west of New York City, the area experienced major spurts of growth beginning in 1873 with the arrival of the railroad and again during World War I with the establishment of Camp Merrit in the east part of the Borough.
The 2024 Trust grant will help fund an updated intensive-level architectural survey for 16 properties in the Borough.
