Seventeenth Century Clark House

Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund
Capital Level I
Grant Award: $145,950 (2024)
Grant Recipient: Township of Clark
County: Union
Municipality: Clark Township

The Seventeenth Century Clark House (Dr. William Robinson House) was built in 1686 and is individually listed under Criterion C “Design/Construction”. The structure is a rare surviving example of heavy-timber frame Seventeenth Century architecture and is more reflective of New England than the Mid-Atlantic. The house has been preserved and is interpreted through the people who have lived in the house, as well as its rare architecture. The house was a residence on larger agricultural land and went through a number of owners until it was bought by the Township of Clark in 1973. It is now run as a historic house museum and operated by the Clark Historical Society. The Historical Society handles cleaning, but the Township is in charge of all repairs and maintenance of the site.

The 2024 Trust grant will help fund a Preservation Plan and roof replacement.
