NJDOT reopens Route 49
Cohansey River bridge to four lanes in Bridgeton

(Trenton) - Commissioner Stephen Dilts today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has reopened the Route 49 Bridge over the Cohansey River to four lanes of traffic in Bridgeton City, Cumberland County.

On Saturday morning, June 20, NJDOT reopened two lanes in each direction of Route 49 in Bridgeton. Previously, traffic had been restricted to one lane in each direction for construction operations. Temporary single lane closures may continue through July 15, 2009 in order to pave and stripe the eastbound side of the roadway.

NJDOT also will install new sidewalks and pedestrian crosswalks at on Route 49 at Fayette, Franklin, Atlantic, South Laurel and South Pearl streets.

The $14 million project replaced the Route 49 Cohansey River Bridge and its approaches from Giles Street to Bank Street. NJDOT widened the travel lanes, upgraded traffic signals and roadway lighting, and replaced the mainline roadway drainage system. Construction started in November 2007 and will be complete by July 15, 2009.
