Route 46 Hackensack River Bridge

Overview

This web site has been archived and is no longer being updated.

The Route 46 Hackensack River Bridge was built in 1934 and spans over the Hackensack River, several railroad tracks and a local roadway. It is located between the Borough of Little Ferry and the Village of Ridgefield Park. Both of these communities located in Bergen County, in northern New Jersey, are in the heart of the New York/New Jersey Metropolitan region. The bridge carries Route 46, a major east-west highway. The route has a western boundary in Columbia on the Delaware River and an eastern boundary in the middle of the George Washington Bridge.

The Route 46 Hackensack River Bridge is a 1,549 foot long bridge that has 17 spans. The main span over the Hackensack River has a double leaf deck-girder trunnion bascule configuration located near the center of the structure. The remaining approach spans have a concrete encased steel deck-girder and floor beam configuration. The eastern approach spans across New York Susquehanna and Western (NYS&W) railroad tracks, CSX railroad tracks and the Main Street Bypass. The western approach spans are over wetland and open areas. The structure carries two lanes of traffic in each direction with no shoulders.

Several elements of the bridge show severe deterioration and the useful life of the structure will be compromised if no repairs are initiated. The Route 46 Hackensack River Bridge project proposes to bring the existing structure into a state of good repair and add an additional service life of approximately twenty years.
