Coming Early 2025: Major Upgrades to the NJ Tax-Filing System

The New Jersey Division of Taxation is modernizing its tax-filing system through a multi-phased approach.

Beginning early 2025, businesses and tax preparers that file Sales and Use Tax will utilize the new secure taxpayer portal to interact with New Jersey's tax-filing system. The portal will provide direct filing capabilities and increased control over their accounts.

At that time, business owners will be able to create an account to access the full benefits of the NJ Tax Portal. You will need your Tax Identification Number and figures from your last filed return, which you can obtain from your own filing records or the original filing system. Additionally, you will need your four-digit PIN, which serves as your login passcode. This PIN was provided in the Welcome Letter you received after registering your business. If you need to retrieve your PIN, you can request it here.

Business owners will be able to delegate account access to their preparers. Detailed instructions and a step-by-step guide will be provided as the 2025 launch date approaches. Key data from the current system will be transferred to the new portal, and the Division will offer online tutorials, webinars, and instructional guides to help you familiarize yourself with the new system. Customer support will be available to assist with any issues during the transition.

You will initially have the option to make monthly payments and file quarterly returns without creating a new portal account. This process will remain seamless to ensure you can manage your obligations without interruption. However, those that file under the "guest" option will not be able to access the full functionality of the portal without creating an account.

This will be the first major enhancement to the Division's tax-filing system in over 40 years. The portal will fundamentally improve how tax filers and preparers interact with the Division of Taxation. The first phase, which will go live in early 2025, will cover the 17 taxes under the Sales and Use category. Additional tax categories and functionalities will be rolled out in later phases.
