Office of the Ombudsman for Individuals
with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities and Their Families

Flora Bates

mother of two adult sons with autism

"Hello, I am the mom of two awesome adult sons, both of whom have autism. They need extensive support and The Office of the Ombudsman has been a tremendous resource for us. The kindness of Ombudsman Paul Aronsohn immediately put me at ease. Paul and the staff in his office understand the challenges of special needs families. Paul personally came to my home to attend a meeting as I tried to explain to DDD how extensive my sons' needs were. Paul's presence at multiple meetings has given me peace of mind and has sent a powerful message to DDD that The Office of the Ombudsman does take an active interest in supporting special needs individuals and their families throughout New Jersey. In my experience, DDD responded by putting appropriate supports in place. I will be forever grateful to Paul and The Office of the Ombudsman for really caring and making sure my sons' needs were recognized and their rights were respected. Before talking to Paul, I felt completely overwhelmed. Paul truly listened and was always very supportive. He pointed me in the right direction so I could navigate and secure appropriate services for my sons. To me, Paul was a lifesaver. He listened. He cared. He followed up. As a special needs parent, life can be challenging when we feel no one truly understands. It really is peace of mind for all of us to know that Paul and The Office of the Ombudsman is looking over our special needs loved ones trying to ensure they are safe and cared for with dignity."
