Alternatives
Between 1999 and
2001, during the Scope
Development and Feasibility
Assessment (FA) Phase of
the project, the New Jersey
Department of Transportation
(NJDOT) held three scope
team meetings and five
meetings with Netcong Borough
officials. A "Resolution
of Support" (pdf
52k) for the Initially Preferred
Alternative (IPA) was adopted
by the Borough of Netcong
on June 14, 2001. Further
concerns surfaced subsequent
to the Public Information
Center (PIC) regarding
this IPA, including:
- the relatively straight alignment
proposed for Route 183
would encourage speeding,
and
- the proposed realignment
of Route 183 east of
its current location
north of the bridge would
require demolition of
at least one of two small
apartment buildings
NJDOT prepared an update of
this proposal which retained
a reverse-curve alignment
along Route 183 approximating
that of existing southbound.
One condition of this refined
IPA was that since the
alignment of Route 183
across the New Jersey Transit
(NJT) railroad bridge was
retained, the bridge could
not be replaced in stages
and would need to be closed
during its construction.
This IPA was presented
to Borough officials for
their input on July 13,
2004. A later briefing
was held with them on June
2, 2005 to present a more
detailed version, which
was well received and generally
considered by Borough officials
to be an improvement on
the previous IPA. A third
PIC presenting the refined
IPA (pdf
2.7m) was held on January
26, 2006. Positive comments
were received and the refined
IPA was used as the
basis for design.
