NJ GEAR UP guides middle and high school students on the path to college and provides tools for academic success. With a college education, students will gain career options, knowledge, and skills hat will last a lifetime.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Attend one of the NJ GEAR UP target schools
  • Be eligible for free or reduced price lunch
  • Show motivation to prepare for college
NJ GEAR UP Services *
  • Academic and personal counseling
  • PARCC, PSAT, and SAT prep classes
  • A 6-week summer program on a college campus
  • Help with college applications
  • Professional development for teachers
  • Mentoring
  • After-school tutoring
  • College visits and tours
  • Financial aid information workshops
  • Cultural and educational field trips
  • College scholarships**

*Services such as test preparation and tutoring may be available for additional students who are not on the official GEAR UP roster. Contact the program in your city for more information.

** GEAR UP scholarship awards are available for students who started the GEAR UP program in the 7th grade (prior to August 31st, 2011), complete the program, graduate high school, and enroll in a New Jersey college or university, Availability is contingent upon federal funding.


How to Join NJ GEAR UP*

There is no cost to enroll in NJ GEAR UP or to attend activities. For more information on how to get involved, contact the program director in your city. To participate in the program students must:

  • Complete an application
  • Attend an interview with parents or guardians
  • Sign a participation contract
