NJ MLK Commemorative Commission 2022 'The Fierce Urgency of Now' Scholarship Essay Contest

The NJ MLK Commemorative Commission's 2022 Scholarship Essay Contest is open to NJ residents in Grade 12.
Applications due by MARCH 18, 2022 AT 5PM

Note funds must be disbursed directly to the school by June 24, 2022.

REQUIRED ESSAYS:

The essay topics focus on this year’s theme: “THE FIERCE URGENCY OF NOW,” one of Dr. King’s most powerful sayings.

Applicants must write an original essay in response to each of the following three (3) essay questions:

  • How does the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspire you as you think about your future? (100 to 300 words)
  • Please tell us about your service to others during your high school years. (100 to 300 words)
  • Dr. King always voiced his concerns about the needs of our country and the international community. What are the greatest challenges facing your community and how can we use his strategies to address them? (100 to 300 words)

After initial screening, applicants who are selected to continue will be asked to email the Commission:

  • Two (2) letters of reference from teachers, advisers, clergy and/or representatives of community-based service programs.
  • Official High School Transcript from 11th Grade.

Failure to provide any of the required elements may disqualify the application.
