Mask Policy Update:

Thank you for your patronage and support in these challenging times. The State of New Jersey has lifted universal indoor masking for visitors and staff in state buildings. Masking is still strongly encouraged if you have booked a reserved or guided programs in galleries and classroom spaces.

Welcome Back!

Groups are welcome at the Museum and Planetarium. If you are a school or homeschool group you can see all of our field trip options in our LEARN section. Admission to the Museum is free and you do not need advanced reservations to explore the galleries on your own. Guided tours and programs are by reservation only and will be available beginning April 6, 2022.

Safety Guidelines
The NJ State Museum is excited to welcome school groups back for in-person field trips! To ensure students, teachers, chaperones and Museum staff have the safest possible experience the following safety measures are in place:

  • In accordance with the State of New Jersey’s updated guidelines, the NJ State Museum no longer requires masks for museum visitors. However, we strongly encourage all of our guests to wear masks and socially distance as practicable while in the building.
  • Face masks are required to attend reserved or guided programs in galleries and classroom spaces. Masks will be available free of charge to all participants.

The Planetarium is available Wednesday-Friday for groups by advanced reservation only with payment due two weeks before your visit. Show times during the week are 10am, 11am and 1pm. To reserve seats in the Planetarium for the group rate of $5.00 per person (groups of 15 or more) contact reservations at email

Groups may also attend public shows on Saturday and Sunday. We do not accept advanced reservations for public weekend shows but groups can pay on arrival at the box office. Show times are 12:00, 1:00, 2:00 & 3:00, visit the Events Calendar for current show titles.

Groups arriving Tuesday-Friday may reserve Riverview Court in advance for brown bag lunches. Available lunch times are 11:00, 12:00 and 1:00. Contact reservations at email Groups arriving Saturday and Sunday may eat in Riverview Court on a first-come first-serve basis.

Extend your experience with a take-and-make activity kit for your group to make art, explore Lenape culture or identify fossils. Kits are available in bundles of 25 and include digital instructions for $75.00 per bundle. Kits can be picked up at the Museum during your visit. Virtual Programs

Groups can schedule a live virtual session with one of our Museum experts before or after a visit. Virtual sessions include a presentation followed by interactive Q&A. You can invite our expert to your Zoom link or request a Zoom link from the Museum to share with your group. Choose from two different Ask the Experts programs or a Live Night Sky Talk.

Ask the Experts: Fossil Hunters in New Jersey

$3.00 per person New Jersey abounds with fossils! Paleontologist Dr. Dana Ehret shares exciting fossil discoveries from throughout the state, what fossils tell us about ancient ecosystems, and all of the challenges paleontologist face in this adventurous field.

Ask the Experts: People of the Past, Archaeology in New Jersey

$3.00 per person How do artifacts help archaeologists understand the lives of prehistoric humans? Archaeologist Dr. Gregory Lattanzi leads this exploration of the unique artifacts, geography and environments of important New Jersey archaeological sites.

Live Night Sky Talk

$2.00 per person Let an expert astronomer walk you through the sky! Learn all about New Jersey’s night sky, and the constellations and planets you can observe. Live Night Sky talks typically last 20 minutes. When you book a Live Night Sky Talk, you’ll receive the link to stream the incredible show “To Space and Back”. Take a journey to the far reaches of our known universe! Share the story of human ingenuity and engineering, and the daily impacts of space travel on our lives. Show runs 45 minutes.
